From a Stone Wall in Spain to Our Belen Vineyard
In 2013, while walking the Camino de Santiago, I shared a glass of wine with a local winemaker and knew my life was about to change. Chavez Brothers Vineyard and Winery is a dream fulfilled for Fred Chavez. While on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, he was invited to share wines with Don Pedro Roberto de Jesus. While sitting on a wall overlooking Don Pedro’s vineyard, and sharing the fruits of Don Pedro's labor, Fred knew then that upon retiring from a successful law career, he wanted to own a vineyard, make the best wines he could, and share with others. On May 1st, 2021, that dream became a reality with the opening of the Chavez Brothers Winery.
May 1, 2022, we celebrated our one year anniversary at 210-B South Main Street in Belen, NM. We are grateful for all the wonderful people who have encouraged and supported us in this new adventure. Our goal is, and continues to be, to make the Best New Mexico Wine from grapes primarily grown in the Middle Rio Grande Valley, and share it with People who walk through our door. On May 1, 2022, we also received a "Congratulations" email from the Great American International Wine Competition announcing that our 2021 Chancellor received the Bronze Award. The competition included over 1200 entries from 196 wineries from around the world. The announcement was also a wonderful way to enhance our First Anniversary Celebration as a winery.

Had a great time talking with Freddie about his hike in Spain which started it all. We really enjoyed sitting with him for the tasting and picked up five different vintages by the time we parted.
Carrying all the bottles back to the car (walked from Pete's about 6 blocks away) was a good workout

We came in not knowing what to expect and left with three bottles…as well as feeling like Freddie and Sue were our family. We live near Maryland/Virginia wine country, so we’re big wine people…and this place is a good one. Live music. Good wine. Beautiful people. Please go and enjoy yourself here.
